Hot Tub Care Tips

a well-taken care of hot tub will last for years

Proper Hot Tub Care Keeps Your Hot Tub in Tip-Top Shape for Years!

A hot tub is a significant investment often costing near $10,000 between installation, electrical wiring, and the spa itself.  Use our tips to make sure your tub last as long as possible so you can relax in the years ahead.  If you live in Boulder, CO, we’d be happy to clean your hot tub for you or drain and refill your hot tub as needed.

Keep Up With the Water Chemistry

One essential item every hot tub owner needs is a water testing kit.  The kit will come with instructions, and if followed, will help you make sure the chemicals in the water are safe.  Typically, you want to make sure the chemicals are in the following ranges:

  •  pH: 7.4 to 7.6
  • Chlorine: 1.0 ppm to 3.0 ppm
  • Bromine: 2.0 ppm to 4.0 ppm
  • Alkalinity: 80 – 120 ppm
  • Calcium Hardness: 150 – 250 ppm

By keeping the water in these chemical ranges, you will do a lot to prevent issues related to mold and algae forming

Clean the Hot Tub Regularly

If you use your hot tub every week, we recommend cleaning your hot tub weekly.  If you are a less frequent user, cleaning every other week should be enough.  When you clean the tub, start with testing the water’s chemicals.  Make a note of what will need to be added to get the water back into the right range.  Next, turn on the jets for a few minutes to pump out any dirt or grime in the lines.  After the jets run, we recommend emptying any debris from the basket.  With the basket removed, you can access the filter.

Every time we clean a hot tub, we will rinse the filter off with a hose and check for any damage.  Be careful when replacing the filter to make sure it goes in the same way it came out.  With a clean filter, you are now ready to use a skimming net and vacuum any dirt or leaves at the bottom.  We’ve included links to the net and pump we use.  Once you’ve skimmed and vacuumed, add water to get the hot tub back to the recommended water level.  Lastly, add chemicals according to the labels to get back to the correct levels.

Don't Forget About the Cover!

One often forgotten hot tub care item is cleaning the cover.  Covers are expensive to replace.  We recommend a quick wipe down with a soft sponge or hand towel and then applying some vinyl protectant.  Be sure to remember to wipe down the underside (tub-facing side) as it will frequently have mildew.  Lastly, once you are finished cleaning, remove the cover and let it air out.  This will go a long way to keeping your cover around for a long time.
